What’s the closest a singer can get to singing for an audience, without actually singing?

Talking to an audience – about singing!

And that’s exactly what I did, on tour with the East-West Arts Initiative in China and Singapore in April 2025. A large part of the company’s mission involves education and sharing Western classical music knowledge with Eastern audiences.

So I put together two very comprehensive lectures – three hours long each – about vocal technique, repertoire, and training. Using the ABRSM vocal courses as a rubric, I trained both voice students and teachers who were interested in learning how to teach ABRSM and other Western courses to their students applying to international programmes.

Read more about both lectures below.

“Ten Steps to Transform Text into a Transcendent Performance”

My first lecture centers around the very thing that separates singers from other musicians – text! How to use it convincingly and effectively to communicate best with your audiences and deliver top-notch performances. I break down my 10-step approach for learning new repertoire, full of nuggets of wisdom for young singers.

“Understanding Voice Types – and Finding Your Students’”

My second lecture features a deep dive into the complex and nuanced world of voice types in the operatic tradition. I give a thorough history of voice types, explanations and examples of each fach, then exercises and disclaimers about how to find a student’s true voice type.
